Meet the Pastor

Rev. Alan R. Follett is completing his second year of his appointment at the Rapidan Charge, of which Mt. Zion UMC is one of the three churches he serves. The other churches are Bethsaida UMC in Brightwood and Walker’s UMC in Radiant. This is the fourth appointment of Rev. Follett’s ministry.

Rev. Follett is a 1999 graduate of University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, where he received a Bachelor’s in Liberal Studies in religion and was named distinguished graduate in that department. During his time at the university, he was elected as one of the first members of the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Mary Washington. He attended Duke Divinity School from 1999- 2002 and is currently enrolled in the United Methodist Course of Study program at Wesley Theological Seminary.

Before answering the call to serve in parish ministry, Rev. Follett was active in the world of politics, public relations, and grassroots lobbying. He was the founder and president of The Assembly Group, a political consulting firm based in Richmond that worked with all candidates from all arenas – from local to legislative to federal and statewide and that extended its work beyond Virginia to neighboring states in the Southeast. He was able to expand the firm’s work into the fields of public relations and lobbying, with clients as diverse as the City of Richmond, The Walt Disney Company, and the pop artist Peter Max.  In 1994, Rev. Follett sold his share of the company to his other partners.

Rev. Follett has a life-long love of sports, especially baseball; and for several years he worked as an umpire for a semi-professional league in Virginia. He is an avid reader – with a special interest in theater, especially the works of Ibsen, Chekhov, Shaw, and Shakespeare.

He has been married for thirty years to the former Carol Page Carpenter of Concord, North Carolina, who is a student at Wesley Theological Seminary, a web designer, and a fine artist. They have no children; but they are proud owners of two dogs and one cat – Micah, a two year old Golden Retriever; Honor, a two year old Black Labrador Retriever; and Paloma, the eighteen year old cat.
